Sen. Gordon Leads Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Operations in Typhoon Nina Affected Areas

The national chairperson of the Philippine National Red Cross (PRC) Sen. Richard Gordo leads the country's most popular Non-Government Organization (NGO) on their continuous relief efforts in the areas affected by super typhoon Nina that hit the Bicol Region during Christmas eve.

The PRC continues its presence in the affected areas by extending assistance through clearing operations and provision of hot meals o stranded passengers in various terminals in the region.

Sen. Dick Gordon who heads the Red Cross in the Philippines tasked some of his teams who were among the first on the ground to monitor and immediately respond to the battered situation in the affected provinces devastated by Bagyong Nina.

As of December 28, 2016, the PRC Operation Center reports that Bagyong Nina affected 335 barangays in 73 municipalities. A estimated total of 41,994 families or roughly 200,000 individuals were affected by the typhoon, which caused damages to some 400 houses based on the data they gathered so far.

In an initial report released to the Philippine Information Agency (PIA), the Philippine Red Cross noted that Bagyong Nina left a trail of destruction that includes 430 totally damaged houses and 1,205 partially damaged houses.

There are also 3 damaged health facilities, the typhoon also temporarily dispatched thousands of families and left 3 people dead. Much of the people's livelihoods in the areas devastated by Bagyong Nina were affected by interrupted water, electricity and communication supplies as lines were down as of the moment.

The PRC already provided hot meals to 2,122 individuals (Catanduanes- 406, Masbate- 119, Samar- 275, Pablo- 367, Batangas- 955), 1,084 food items to 1,084 families in Sorsogon, assisted people due to health conditions, mobilized 94 people (59 volunteers and 35 staff) to assess and rescue people.

“Red Cross was able to provide rescue, assessment, welfare assistance, debris clearing, provision of hot meals to various terminals and ports and first aid management in Nina affected areas. We also mobilized drones in 3 provinces to see the whole damage done by the typhoon. With the help of our volunteers on the ground, assessment and rescue were swiftly done and assistance will be delivered to the affected families and communities,” said PRC Chairman Richard Gordon.
