Senate Panel Sets Hearing on DITO Telecom Franchise Renewal

The Philippine Senate sets hearing on DITO Franchise renewal this coming December 7, 2020 according to the latest pronouncement released by Sen. Grace Poe who said that the company will have an opportunity to dispute allegations that the construction of its cell sites inside military camps will pose a national security threat.

According to Senate Committee on Public Services, Sen. Grace Poe said she will conduct a hybrid hearing on Monday, December 7, 2020.

In a text message sent to The Manila Bulletin, the senator stated "Our December 7 hearing to discuss the franchise renewal of Dito is also an opportunity for the NTC (National Telecommunications Commission) to show the public how it has been doing its job during the ongoing pandemic,” Poe said in a text message.

Sen. Grace voiced hope that the hearing would be able "to show in concrete terms it ensured compliance of telcos for ample bandwidth allocation and availability of service and signal to its subscribers.”

Aside from Sen. Grace Poe, Akbayan lawmaker, Sen. Risa Hontiveros on her part urged earlier that the Senate should speed up the proe on the deal between the Armed Forces of the Philippines and DITO allowing the latter to install cell sites in military camps.

She warned that Dito’s plans to build cell towers inside AFP camps nationwide poses security risk since the company is 40 percent owned by the Chinese government.

Sen. Hontiveros earlier urged the Senate Committee on National Defense and Security to tackle Senate Resolution 137 which she filed in 2019 seeking to investigate the AFP-Dito deal.
