Pres. Duterte Warns Telco Companies Anew to Improve Service Amid DepEd Online Classes

The tough-talking President of the Republic, Pres. Rody Duterte warned and made a renewed appeal to the major telecommunications companies in the country to improve their services particularly with the expected surge in internet use as classes open next week.

In a public address on Monday night, Pres. Duterte was quoted as saying "The eternal complaint ever since telco came into being, it has been the agony of the Filipino people why until now ang telcos natin is very poor,” President Duterte said.

Pres. Duterte added further that "“I don’t know how to go about this but may I just appeal to iyong mga telecommunications to — can you — can you do a better job? Is there life after this kind of service that you are delivering to the public? Kasi kung kaya ko lang na mag-isang salita nandiyan na kaagad, matagal na itong natapos itong problema ng Pilipinas." the President stated.

The former Mayor of Davao City has rallied against the major telecommunications company, particularly Globe Telecom and PLDT-Smart for their alleged 'subpar services' in which the telcos blamed the government for the circuitous permit application approval process at the local level.

Pres. Duterte also called the attentions of all the local officials nationwide to support the needs of the telco companies, "Let telcos do their job, allow them to build structures, towers if you may, para naman ma-improve nila. It's a chicken and - chicken ang egg thing eh. Which comes first. So your cooperation or the zeal of the telcos to do better."

The call and warning of Pres. Duterte was in coordination with the Department of Education (DepEd), the agency that is now implementing blended learning, an alternative learning modalities amid COVID-19 pandemic.

This is not the first time that Pres. Duterte warned the major telco players in the country. During the last week of July, invoking public anger, Pres. Duterte warned PLDT-Smart and Globe Telecom to shape up by December 2020 or face expropriation.

According to the President he would take drastic steps against PLDT, Smart and Globe Telecom if they would not improve their services.
