Real Reasons Why Pres. Duterte Want to Build Navy Base in Fuga Island (US is the Greatest Threat to Fuga)

A concerned netizen and veteran columnist reveals the possible reasons why the President of the Philippines, Pres. Rody Duterte plans to build a Navy Base in the strategic Fuga Island.

The concerned netizen was no other than Rod Kapunan, the political analyst, he revealed on his latest article that the United States is considered as the greatest threat to Fuga Island and that is one of the main reasons why Pres. Dutere decided to established a Philippine Navy based in Fuga Island.

According to Kapunan, there is indeed an enormous economic potential of Fuga Island. He revealed that the country's interest to build a naval base in Fuga Island is not to deter China, but to keep the area open to international revelation, while converting the Cagayan Export Processing Zone to a shoppers' paradise and tourist destination.

The island is one o the several islets intersecting the South China Sea and the Pacific Ocean. It is the waterway that divides the Philippines and Taiwan. Fuga Island is located north of the Balintang Channel.

The veteran author revealed that from a military standpoint, no country except the United States needs Fuga Island as base. Fuga Island is sufficient to accommodate naval ships. The sounding of US interest for Fuga Island is meant to pre-empt the 'creeping invasion' by China, much that it could see the inflow of Chinese investments which it could not otherwise complete.

The strategic location of Fuga Island, is the main reason why some countries have been racing to conduct underwater exploration for mineral resources, particularly the areas within the country's EEZ.

Based on initial findings of the area, especially the Philippine Rise, contains polymetallic sulfides and three or more metals of commercial quantities. Among such metals are gold, silver, copper, iron, zinc, and lead.

Fuga Island which was eyed earlier by Pres. Duterte as the site of the newest Naval Base is part of the Babuyan chain of islands, despite its proximitiy to the Province of Batanes, it is attached to the Province of Cagayan.

The island has an area of 70 square kilometers and a population of 2,015 inhabitants. Because of its strategic location, the US has been eyeing the island for future military use to serve as sentry base for ships traversing in and out of the South China Sea.
