BIR Officials Arrested for the Alleged P75-Million Extortion Operation

Two high-ranking officials of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) were apprehended by some elements of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).


The Assessment Section Chief of the Bureau of Intenal Revenue (BIR) Revenue District Office 43 and Revenue Office 2 Examiner were apprehended during the entrapment operations.



According to the news report posted by RMN News and Abante News, a multi-million alleged extortion operation was busted involving high-ranking government officials working for the BIR.

The victim of the said extortion activities of the BIR officers is a well-known cellphone company with billions of tax obligations from the government.

The suspects were identified as Assessment Head Fred Pagdilao and BIR Examiner Agrifina Ballesteros.

The NBI were able to confiscate some bags of cash with millions of pesos amounting to an estimated P75 million cold cash.

According to Presidential Anti-Corruption Commissioner Greco Belgica, the suspects first extorted around P160 million from the cellphone company Vivo.



Based upon the information provided by the media, one of the suspect, Assessment Chief Fred Pagdilao is the first cousin of NCRPO Director Joel Pagdilao, one of those who was allegedly involved in the illegal drug trade or narco-general in 2016 according to Pres. Duterte's statement.

The entrapment operations of the NBI was conducted on Saturday. The operation was conducted at the basement parking of Seda Hotel in Vertis North Quezon City.

Commissioner Belgica noted that they already prepared all the documents for the cases to be filed against the two high-ranking BIR officials. A media briefing will be conducted later as confirmed by the PACC.
