The Secretary of the Department of Health, Secretary Francisco Duque III admitted on Tuesday that of one of WellMed Dialysis Center's co-owners Bryan Christopher Sy is related by law to the Health Secretary.
According to Sec. Duque the father of one of WellMed Dialysis Center's co-owners called him up after Inquirer made a report of its alleged "ghost dialysis" scheme was brought to light last week.
Secretary Francisco Duque turned out to be one of Bryan Christopher Sy's godfathers at his wedding in 2014.
In an interview with Inquirer, the Health Secretary was quoted as saying "That’s a fact I won’t deny. But we do not have any relationship, even professionally. I don’t talk to them," the Health Secretary stated.
The head of the Department of Health, Secretary Duque also serves as ex-officio chair of Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth).
Last Tuesday, the National Bureau of Investigation charged 10 people, including WellMed Vice Pressident Sy, with estafa and falsification of documents in the Department of Justice (DOJ) in connection with P800,000 worth of “ghost” claims.
The Inquirer also revealed that Secretary Duque is a former classmate of Bryan Christopher Sy's father during their school days at the University of Santo Tomas.
