Thinking Pinoy Expose: Karen Davila's Principle vs. Money on Gretchen Fullido Issue

One of the country's most prominent and popular social media personality shared an interesting expose and commentaries in the controversial issue involving Karen Davila and her silent in the issue involving fellow ABS-CBN employee Gretchen Fullido.

In the viral post of Thinking Pinoy dubbed "Principles vs. Money: The Very Interesting Karen Davila Retweet," the veteran blogger revealed that Davila, is likely in defense of herself, retweeted one of her sympathizers' tweet about her eerie silence on the Gretchen Fullido harassment case involving ABS-CBN executives.

Thinking Pinoy explain that Karen Davila's tweet basically explain that Karen may invoke her right to remain silent when her freedom to speak is limited by the rules of the organization where she belongs.

There's some indications that ABS-CBN appears to have issued a gag order to its employees in relation to the Gretchen Fullido case, and therein lies the fundamental problem. Davila's silence wouldn't have mattered much is she has a history of neutrality on controversial issue, but she doesn't.

Here's the Complete Expose of Thinking Pinoy:

PRINCIPLES VS MONEY: THE VERY INTERESTING @IAMKARENDAVILA RETWEET

Karen Davila, likely in defense of herself, retweeted this afternoon one of her sympathizers' tweets about her eerie silence on the @GretsFullido sexual harassment case.

The tweet basically said Karen may invoke her right to remain silent when her freedom to speak is limited by the rules of the organization where she belongs.

Yes, ABS-CBN appears to have issued a gag order to its employees in relation to the Gretchen Fullido sexual harassment issue.

And therein lies the fundamental problem.

Davila's silence wouldn't have mattered much if she has a history of neutrality on controversial issue, but she doesn't.

Davila has been known to be a vocal advocate of women's rights so it's safe to say that fighting for women's rights is part of her core principles, something she apparently confirmed in a tweet earlier today when she said her stance against sexual harassment and victim shaming are values that "are eternal to her person".

The fact remains, however, that Davila has been part of the ABS-CBN Newsroom for over a decade, so it's reasonable to expect that she has thorough knowledge of what goes on over there both on-air and otherwise.

With that said, Karen cannot possibly know nothing about the real deal behind the Gretchen Fullido (Official Page) sexual harassment issue, especially since she has worked in the recent past not only with Fullido, but also the several defendants identified in the cases Fullido filed.

Despite this, Karen chose to remain neutral on the issue. And judging from her retweet, it seems that ABS-CBN's internal rules is the culprit.

With that said, we can reduce the Karen Davila brouhaha over this simple issue: Davila was made to choose between [1] upholding her pro-woman principles and [2] keeping her lucrative job.

In simpler terms, she was made to choose between principles and money.

Now, guess what she chose.

ABS-CBN News is by no means the end-all and be-all of the journalism industry. Davila can easily seek and readily gain employment from other news outlets such as News5 and CNN Philippines if she feels that her current organization prevents her from upholding, in her own words, the "values (that) are eternal to [her] person", so what is keeping her from being her usual ultra-vocal women's advocate?

Is it because the other news outlets can't match her current compensation structure?

After all, ABS-CBN News is arguably the biggest in the country, and with size comes lots of money.

Miss Davila, simply spouting pro-woman truisms does not make one a genuine advocate.

A genuine advocate, regardless of the advocacy, takes a solid stance even if there's a threat to his or her life, liberty, or property.

And judging from how you've been behaving these past couple of days... you know what I'm gonna say.

Now, is she, along with the other erstwhile hyper-vocal self-proclaimed pro-woman advocates, the kind of "legit journalists" worthy of enjoying public trust?

Well, I do not think so.
