Former Interior Secretary Mar Roxas to Run as Senator in 2019 Not as LP But an Independent Candidate

Former DOTC and DILG Secretary Mar Roxas, one of Noynoy Aquino's closest ally is reportedly "seriously consideing" to make a Senate comeback in the upcoming 2019 elections not as Liberal Party member but as an independent candidate.

According to some insiders in the camp of Mar Roxas, the former Senator and Presidential bet during the 2016 elections will most likely make a last-minute filing of his Certificate of Candidacy (COC) on August 17, 2018 at the main office of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) in Intramuros, Manila.

Based upon the initial information presented by some insiders in the camp of Mar Roxas, unlike his previous electoral bids, he might reportedly not run under the political party founded by his family, the Liberal Party (LP), where he belongs for the past few years as a political personality.

The Liberal Party leadership last week already announced that they have reserved a slot for Mar Roxas in its Senate slate but sources said Mar Roxas seemed to prefer to run as independent candidate for strategic purposes.

The former ruling political party, Liberal Party (LP) headed by Vice Pres. Leni Robredo and Sen. Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan revealed to the media at least three prominent figures in politics who will run for Senator under the LP banner namely, Sen. Bam Aquino, former Representative Lorenzo Tañada, and lawyer Jose Manuel Diokno.

Mar Roxas ran as LP’s standard bearer back in the 2016 presidential but lost to then Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.
