Purefoods Star Hotshots and former member of the Gilas Pilipinas, Jio Jalalon (he was replaced by Baser Amer) in the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers against the visiting Australian team made headlines on social media after he was caught punching Australian player Nathan Sobey during the controversial Gilas vs. Australia brawl at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan.
Jio Jalalon is a member of the Gilas Pilipinas Team that beats the Chinese Taipei squad during the last assignment of the Philippine Team in Taiwan. Together with Allein Maliksi, Jalalon was replaced by both Baser Amer and Carl Bryan Cruz in the Philippine line-up against Australia.

The Philippine team Gilas Pilipinas was defeated by the visiting Australian Boomers who were skippered by some NBA veterans and considered as the strongest team in FIBA Asia with a previous unblemished records of 10-straight wins before they were defeated by the Japanese during their last assignment.
Gilas Pilipinas and Australia have the same 4-1 record before the game, but right now the Philippines ranked second to Australia with a 4-2 record but both teams already secured their spot in the 2019 Basketball World Cup.
Jio Jalalon's punching abilities was already reported during the past few years, last February 2017, Jalalon was also fined by the PBA in the aftermath of the highly-emotional Game Four loss of Star Hotshots against Barangay Ginebra.
The controversial basketball star, Jio Jalalon who was only a rookie during that time was penalized a total of P23,000 for an alleged "punch" he committed against veteran guard Sol Mercado in the third quarter of the match.
Back to the Gilas Pilipinas vs. Australia brawl results, a total of nine (9) players from Gilas Pilipinas and four (4) players of the Australian Boomers were ejected in the game.
