Netizens took to social media as they reacted on the decision of Makabayan Bloc to oppose the implementation of the National ID System in the Philippines. The decision of the Makabayan Bloc to oppose the National ID System implementation was made after the Bicameral Conference Committee approved the bill seeking to establish the Philippine Identification System (PhilSys).
According to Makabayan Bloc the implementation of the National ID System in the Philippines under the leadership of Pres. Rody Duterte would pose threats to the country's security and infringe on people's privacy rights.
The proposed measure according to the Bicameral Conference Committee, seeks to integrate multiple government IDs by establishing a single national identification system.
A prominent member of the Makabayan Bloc, Bayan Muna Rep. Carlos Zarate stated that there's a huge possibilities that the national ID system could cause a data breach among Filipinos. Kabataan Rep. Sara Elago also said that the government could use d the data of the ID System for surveillance against the opposition and the critics of the administration.
Gabriela Rep. Arlene Brosas said that the National ID System is an infringement to our right to privacy, right against surveillance and other forms of civil rights. She suggested that instead of using national funds for the National ID, the money should be used to fund the reforms in our basic social services.
The opposition of the Makabayan Bloc to the proposed national ID system of the Philippines did not sit well among netizens who read their reasons of opposing the bill which was sleeping under the tables of the past administrations although, most of our neighbors already implemented the national ID system on their respective countries.
