The 42,000 Barangay across the Philippines will be connected through a government satellite network once the Presidential Communications Operations Office will roll the state-of-the-art network set to launched in the middle of the year.

PCOO Secretary Martin Andanar revealed that the country's barangays would have to pay P500 every month for access to the satellite network as form of a monthly subscription fee which is "minimal" especially since the government did not pay a centavo for the costly satellite infrastructure.

The Duterte admin plans to roll out an estimated 42,000 satellite receivers in all barangays by June or July that would communicate vital government information to the communiites in a bid to combat fake news according to the PCOO.

Sec. Andanar explained in an interviwew that "Ito po ay unsolicited proposal sa mga satellite network company, so libre po, wala pong gastos ang gobyerno [This is an unsolicited proposal from satellite network companies so it’s free. There is no government expense],” Andanar said in a radio interview.

The PCOO also noted that the President has already approved the proposed government satellite network, that will provided not only free internet access but also allows direct communication between the national government and the barangays.

Sec. Andanar also noted that the satellite system becomes a useful tool in times of calamities and other emergencies.

The PCOO head was quoted as saying "Kung meron hong mga mensahe ang ating Pangulo sa ating mga Barangay Chairman, kahit na wala po silang cell site or cell signal ay madali na po silang makausap [If the President has a message to our barangay chairmen, even though they don’t have a cell site or cell signal, they can communicate],” he said.

The satellite system once installed in every Barangays across the Philippines becomes a useful tool in times of calamities and other emergencies. Apart from having the ability to access government TV and Radio Stations and public bulletin boards, each barangays could also use the satellite receivers for emergency broadcasting system.

The high-tech information satellite network of the government is a project of the Presidential Communications Operations Office.
