The Department of the Interior and Loal Government revealed to the media that a total of nine thousand (9,000) Barangay Captains are included in the updated Narco-List of Pres. Rody Duterte. The President have been known to be very critical against personalities involved in illegal drugs.
According to DILG Undersecretary for Barangay Affairs, Usec Martin Diño, made the announcement 2 months before the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections and warned village chiefs, "wala nang forever sa barangay."
Usec Martin Diño reiterated further that the President have already decided the fate of the 9,000 Barangay Captains directly involved and the DILG will make some moves against the ailing Barangay Chieftains.
The DILG Undersecretary was quoted as saying "Desidido si president. Hawak niya 9,000 na barangay captains directly involved 9,000 na kapitan. Definitely gagalaw na ang DILG most especially sa issue na 'yan," he said.
Usec Diño who is a former Barangay Captain, said officials linked to drugs will be removed from office. "Hindi lang ilalabas, tatanggalin ko na lang sila, mas gusto kong makasuhan, mabulok sila sa kulungan dahil, unang-una, pinagkatiwalaan sila ng mga tao tapos ganito gagawin nila, magmamalabis sila," he said.
The announcement of the former Presidential candidate came after Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) director Aaron Aquino said there are almost 300 barangay officials linked to illegal drugs.
The DILG official also warned barangay officials who will fail to submit their respective barangay drug watch-lists by March 21, saying it is mandatory.
"Tama ang ating chief of PDEA. Ang mga hindi magsa-submit dito, 'yung mga directly involved. Kailangan within a week mag-submit sila kung hindi sila magsa-submit, warning. On the second week, suspension na. On the third week, subject for removal from office," he said.
All barangay chiefs are also required to submit an inventory of their barangay's supplies and equipment so the DILG can monitor their use of public funds, Diño said.
