SEC Revokes Rappler Certificate of Registration for Constitutional Violations (Video)

One of the country's fastest growing news media outlet, Rappler Inc., is no longer registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission after SEC released the revocation of news website Rappler's Certificate of Registration.

According to the SEC decision, Rappler Inc., allegedly violated the Foreign Equity Restriction of the Philippine Constitution, which states that "(t)he ownership and management of mass media shall be limited to citizens of the Philippines, or to corporations, cooperatives or associations, wholly-owned and managed by such citizens."

In SEC's January 11 decision, the powerful SEC said that its Commission En Banc received on December 22, 2016 a letter from the Office of the Solicitor General dated December 14 that same year requesting it to conduct an investigation into Rappler Inc., and Rappler Holdings Corporation "for any possible contravention of the strict requirements of the 1987 Constitution."

During the last State of the Nation Address (SONA), Rappler was mentioned by Pres. Duterte for allegedly piercing their identities that will lead them to America despite the fact that the Constitution requires them to be 100 percent Filipino once they enter the media platform.

Pres. Duterte was quoted as saying " Have you tried to pierce your identity and it will lead you to America? Do you know that? And yet the constitution requires you to be 100 percent --- media --- Filipino. Rappler, try to pierce the identity and you will end up American ownership.
