The tough-talking President of the Philippines, Pres. Rody Duterte, tapped Prospero De Vera III as officer-in-charge of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to replace former chairperson Patricia Licuanan.
Pres. Duterte earlier asked Patricia Licuana to resign as part of the anti-corruption campaign of the Duterte administration. Although Licuanan reportedly resigned first, but Pres. Duterte revealed later that he ordered the firing of the CHED Chair.
According to the official statement of the Palace, Pres. Duterte signed the appointment papers of CHED officer-in-charge Prospero De Vera III on Wednesday, January 24, 2018.
Prior to the appointment of De Vera he served as a commissioner of CHED and before being a member of the powerful body, the veteran educator served as Vice President for Public Affairs of the University of the Philippines (UP).
The newly-appointed officer-in-charge of CHED was also a director of two UP National College of Public Administration and Governance's center, the Center for Policy and Executive Development and the Center for Leadership, Citizenship, and Democracy.
The appointment of Devea came after numerous reports that the former CHED Chief Licuanan was accused of traveling abroad eight times without the Palace's approval.
Licuanan, an appointee of former President Aquino, announced her resignation from CHED upon the instruction of Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea.
