The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief, General Gilbert Gapay claimed that China Telecoms spy risk in the country is 'very low' upon approval for the construction of DITO Telecom towers inside military camps in the Philippines.
According to Gen. Gapay the telecom firm, DITO Telecommunity which is partly-owned by a Chinese telecommunications company posed no security threat, and said equipment it will install in army camps will be tightly scrutinized.
The AFP Chief state that having the communications kits on bases would allow the military to access it easily an inspect it to ensure it was compliant.
In an interview with some international news media outlet, the AFP Chief stated that "We don't see any security risk, it is very low," Gen. Gapay said.
The top military official added further that "One advantage of having this facility by DITO inside camps is we could monitor them closely," Gapay said. "We could inspect them anytime".
The AFP also noted that the Philippines' two largest telecom companies, Globe and PLDT also have communication kit in military camps that are also using Chinese technology.
DITO Telecommunity wants to use 22 military sites from different parts of the country, but Gen. Gapay said that those were still under negotiation and would be evaluated. said Gapay.
China Telecom's venture in the Philippines follows repeated promises by Duterte to offer China a place in the local market to boost service quality.
