Globe Telecom to Spend P63 Billion in Capital Expenditures & Cell Sites Construction for 2020

One of the country's leading telecommunications company, Globe Telecom plans to add more cell sites in Metro Manila and 26 other provinces and committed to spend at least P63 billion in capital expenditures to counter the massive build-up of DITO Telecom's tower development projects.

According to Globe, the company is set to expand further it network capability with simultaneous undertaking of cell-site builds in different parts of the country including Aklan, Albay, Batangas, Bohol, Bulacan, Cebu, Davao del Sur, Iloilo, Laguna, Metro Manila, Maguindanao, Negros Occidental, Pampanga, Pangasinan, Quezon, Zamboanga, Sulu, Capiz, Nueva Ecija, Nueva Vizcaya, Tarlac, Palawan, North Cotabato, Leyte, Bukidnon, Benguet, and Zambales.

The tower construction of Globe Telecom started last July 2020 and until the end of the third quarter of 2020 as confirmed by Globe Telecom to various news media outlets.

Globe President and Chief Executive Officer Ernest L. Cu has appealed to local government units to relax their permitting requirements so that telecommunications companies can fast-track the execution of their cellular tower projects.

“We are investing billions of pesos to connect the rest of the public to the digital world to enable things like working and learning from home and yet, there are so many obstacles along the way. I think it is really incumbent upon our local officials to provide telecom infrastructure to their constituents. Telco is like water or power. It is something that people need and want,” he said in a statement last week.

Globe also reported that last May on their report, the company was able to spend P10.7 billion in the first quarter which is 22% higher than last year's expenditures and represented 29% of the company's gross service revenues.

For the past few months, DITO Telecommunity made some massive construction projects in various parts of the country to boost the telecom's signals and coverage.

Globe, for its part, is looking into building cell sites in public schools to ease the transition to blended learning and digital education as face-to-face classes are prohibited pursuant to social distancing measures of the Inter-agency Task Force (IATF).

These private sector efforts, concurrent with the DICT’s strategic issuance of Department Circular (DC) No. 008, s. 2020, that provides for the guidelines on Shared Passive Telecommunications Tower Infrastructure (PTTIs), are expected to improve connectivity services and generate more economic opportunities across the country, in line with the President Duterte’s “Balik Probinsya Bagong Pag-Asa Program.”
