Manny Pangilinan Open to Giving ABS-CBN a Supporting Hand Due to Potential Loss of Broadcast Franchise

The chairman of the third largest media network in the country, Manny V. Pangilanan, chairperson of TV5 confirmed to the media that he is open to supporting media giant and rival ABS-CBN Corporation due to the potential loss of broadcast franchise in 2020.

Pangilinan who is known in the business world as MVP heads some of the country's largest companies such as telecommunications provider PLDT Inc., and Metro Pacific Investments Corporations, but some reports suggests that he was allegedly being used as a dummy by Indonesian billionaire Anthony Salim.

In an interview with some media outlets, MVP was asked about a possible deal for ABS-CBN to rent TV5's airtime, otherwise known as a blocktime agreement, the businessman said he was open to negotiations should they materialize.

“Setting aside politics, if they want to blocktime, we are prepared to talk,” Pangilinan told reporters while clarifying there were no ongoing discussions with ABS-CBN.

A potential alliance between ABS-CBN and TV5, first reported by the news website Bilyonaryo— which cited an unnamed source—would help keep ABS-CBN’s massive television business afloat should its broadcast franchise expire by March 30, 2020.

During the past few days, the ABS-CBN's chances of a franchise extension is getting dimmer after Pres. Duterte repeatedly threatening to block its renewal amid a feud that supposedly began when the TV network failed to air his advertisements during the 2016 presidential elections and numerous complainst against ABS-CBN for their alleged biased reporting.

When asked to comment on the said issue regarding the possibility of ABS-CBN joining hands with TV5, the management of ABS-CBN did not immediately respond to a request for comment according to the article posted online by the Inquirer.

The country's most popular TV Network, ABS-CBN was onced seized from the Lopez Family by the allies of former strongman Ferdinand Marcos during the Martial. It's current 25-year franchise, granted in 1995, allows it to operate TV and radio facilities until 2020.

Bills to renew ABS-CBN’s franchise have languished in Congress for years under President Rody Duterte which gained a huge support from the masses. A huge number of social media bloggers and Duterte supporters are also urging online not to give any chance to the network to renew their contract because of alleged biased reporting against the administration of Pres. Rody Duterte.
