Maynilad & Manila Water Willing to Refund P7.5 Billion to Gov't. to Reconcile with Pres. Duterte

Two of the country's water concessionaire, Maynilad and Manila Water made some headlines after Pres. Rody Duterte warned about their 'onerous' water deals with the government but according to the latest report, they are now willing to refund the P7.5 Billion to the government just to reconcile with the Duterte Administration.

Although there are no official reports from the two controversial water companies, some insiders claimed that the two water companies are willing to negotiate some deals with the Duterte administration.

Facebook Page One Cavite also reported that Maynilad and Manila Water are willing to refund the P7.5 billion to the government just to reconcile with the Duterte administration in connection with the huge anomalous contract of water supply in Metro Manila.

The President for his part is not yet seeking the rescinding of the government's agreements with water concessionaires but wants the contracts amended to remove 'onerous' provisions, MalacaƱang said Sunday.

Pres. Rody Duterte lambasted Manila Water and Maynilad owned by alleged oligarchs, the Ayala Family and Manny V. Pangilinan of First Pacific, over the concession agreements that he claimed are disadvantageous to the government and has threathened to to file economic sabotage, graft and plunder charges against those who crafted the deals.

The President also ordered the Finance Department of the Duterte administration and the solicitor general to draft new deals that are favorable to the government and the public.

Presidential Spokesperson Atty. Salvador Panelo said in a radio interview that "The President was not talking about rescinding (the agreements). Didn't he say that he wants the contracts fixed because the contracts are wrong? They are talking. If they agree there would be no more problems. If not, then there would be filing of charges," Panelo stated.

Atty. Panelo said the concession agreements have to be modifie before the parties could talk about a settlement. "(The contracts) have to be fixed. The two parties will negotiate. They will be discussing terms and how to fix things that the President was reacting to," the Palace spokesman said.
