Presidential son and senatorial candidate Bong Go made headlines on social media and in Mindanao for their exemplary achievements in terms of the peace process in the region. Baste Duterte and SAP Bong Go receive eight (8) captives from the New People's Army in Agusan del Sur.
SAP Bong Go and Baste Duterte visited Barangay San Juan, Bayugan, Agusan del Sur to received the eight released hostages of the New People's Arm. The eight released hostages were among the 12 members of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) and two soldiers the NPA abducted in December last ear in Barangay New Tubigon, Sibagat, Agusan Del Sur.
The NPA had released six of the CAFGUs on February 14 through a third-party facilitator. They were handed over to the Army’s 401st Brigade, Fourth Infantry Division.
“Yung mga hindi pa pinapalaya, ire-release sa amin. Kasama ko si Baste Duterte, pupunta kami doon,” Go said in an ambush interview before proceeding to the site of the handover in Barangay San Juan, Bayugan, Agusan Del Sur.
The eight released captives were identified as Private First Class Darlino Carino Jr., Corporal Eric Manangan (both of the Army’s 3rd Special Forces), and CAFGUs Jimuel Acebedo, Abel Iligan, Rolando Quiao, James Iligan, Gabriel Iligan, and Janjan Iligan.
Baste Duterte and SAP Bong Go accompanied the released NPA captives for their formal handover to the 402nd Brigade of the Philippine Army based in Bancasi, Butuan City, where the first batch of hostages released by the NPA less than a week ago were waiting for them.
The senatorial bet of HNP and PDP-Laban, Bong Go said he had been part of the effort since December last year to secure the release the remaining NPA hostages.
He said a friend of Baste's, who is a relative of one of the captive soldiers, sought help to free the captives.
“Noong nakaraang taon mayroong kaibigan si Baste na kamag-anak ng sundalong nanawagan sa akin para manghingi ng tulong. Noong nanawagan sa akin, naghanap kami ng paraan para makatulong,” recalled Go.
He said he immediately coordinated with Agusan del Sur Governor Adolph Edward Plaza and other local officials who may be able to help facilitate the release of the NPA captives.
