A list of former students of the University of the Philippines (UP) who were alleged members of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army are now circulating on social media as a reminder that students from State Universities should not listened to the brainwashing of the communists and other legal fronts of the CPP.
Although some of these former UP Students were considered as martyrs by some professors of the University of the Philippines, most Filipino on social media agreed that they were just victims of alleged brainwashing of the communist movement in the country.
The former UP Students turned members of the CPP-NPA are listed below:
Recca Noelle Monte --- Engineering, UP Diliman
Christine Puche ------ Journalism, CMC, UP Diliman
Tanya Domingo -------- Fine Arts, UP Diliman
Purification Pedro --- Social Worker, UP Diliman
Ma. Lorena Barros ---- AB Anthropology, Magna Cum Laude, UP Diliman
Professor Bernadette Neri, the coordinator of UP Diliman Gender Office (UPDGO) believed that the former UP students who joined the CPP-NPA were martyrs of their own rights because they sacrifice their lives for principles and strong standpoints on various issues.
Base upon the information provided by the University of the Philippines in their official website, the five former students of UP were members of the Communist Party of the Philippines.
Details of the UP Students Who Became members of CPP-NPA:
Ma. Lorena Barros is a student of AB Anthropology and graduated with highest honors as Magna Cum Laude in 1970. She was considered as a prolific author who organized Malayang Kilusan ng Bagong Kababaihan (Makibaka). She joined the CPP-NPA during Marcos time and was killed in an encounter last March 24, 1975 in Quezon Province.
Purification Pedro graduated with Bachelor of Arts in Social Work degree from UP Diliman. She was more popularly known as Puri and one those UP students who joined the Anti-Chico Dam Movement during the early 70's together with the ethnic groups of Kalinga and Bontoc. She was pronounced dead while inside a detention center in Bataan Provincial Hospital last 1977.
Tanya Domingo was a former student of Fine Arts from UP Diliman during the year 2007. She joined the New People's Army during the administration of former Pres. Arroyo. She was killed during a military operation in Bulacan last January 14, 2010.
Christine Puche graduated with Bachelor of Arts in Journalism degree last 1997. She was also known with the nickname "Ka Nel," became part of the Public Information Bureau of the National Democratic Front in Bicol. She was killed last July 4, 2013.
Recca Noelle Monte took Bachelor of Arts in Industrial Engineering from UP Diliman during the year 1997 as she became a member of the organization, Alay Sining. She went to Cordillera and joined the NPA at the age of 22. Monte was killed at the hands of the AFP last September 4, 2014 in Abra.
