The Philippine Senate failed to adopt a resolution questioning the "unconstitutional" manner in which former Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno was ousted by Chief Justice by her peers at the Supreme Court.
The 14 senators headed by former Senate President Aquilino Pimentel and Liberal Party President Sen. Kiko Pangilinan insisted that it is only Congress tha has the power to oust Sereno from office through impeachment proceedings and not through other means such as a quo warranto petition.
Senators failed to adopt Senate Resolution after a brief debate wherein Sen. Kiko Pangilinan was grilled by former PNP Chief and incumbent lawmaker, Sen. Ping Lacson who burned down Pangilinan during the interpellation of the Senate Resolution.
The Senate Resolution on CJ Sereno was signed by then-Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III, Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph Recto, Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon and Senators Loren Legarda, Pangilinan, Francis Escudero, Antonio F. Trillanes IV, Juan Edgardo Angara, Paolo Benigno Aquino IV, Grace Poe, Sherwin T. Gatchalian, Risa Hontiveros and Villanueva. Seven of them are lawyers.
Former Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno was ousted when the Supreme Court of the Philippines granted the quo warranto petition with a vote of 8-6, the petition was filed by Solicitor General Jose Calida seeking to nullify Sereno's appointment as Chief Justice.
With the failure of the Senate to adopt the resolution questioning the "unconstitutional" manner with which Maria Lourdes Sereno was ousted as Chief Justice, the senators now wait for at least seven weeks.
And after this period, the third regular session of the 17th Congress will open on June 23 with the President delivering his "State of the Nation Address" (SONA) in joint congressional session.
