Veteran San Beda lawyer and prominent social media personality, Atty. Bruce Rivera expose the alleged intent to deceive by Esquire Philippines who released the story about the net worth of selected members of Pres. Rody Duterte's Cabinet.
According to the story released by Esquire Philippines, 14 out of 17 Cabinet members of the Duterte administration got richer in office. Atty. Rivera explained that Esquire wanted to convey that the Duterte Cabinet enriched themselves during their office.
The veteran expose the alleged intent of Esquire PH as he revealed that we should look at the figures, the increase in their net worth can be explained.
First, most of the cabinet members whose income increased by less that 10% of their net worth because of two basic reasons, that is, (1) as cabinet members, they no longer have the overhead expenses like office rentals, transportation costs and staff salary because it now shouldered by the state and (2) since our economy, despite the effects of the TRAIN law on the prices, is rising, those who in business reap the benefits of a blossoming economy.

Second, cabinet members with networth risiing more than 50% like Leonor Briones and Lisa Maza are the poorest. With the benefits of being a cabinet secretary already stated above, it is bound to have a larger impact on their net worth.
Third, those who have substantially increased their income like Cusi, Lorenzana and Dureza can probably explain the rise in their net worth. They have been in business for most of their lives and perhaps, cashing in on their investments.
The reality is, if you nothing to hide, it is not unethical to get rich in office for as long as it not because of the office. Otherwise, if someone got rich because of the office, they usually will find a way to hide it by masking or not filing a SALN.
