Cebu LRT Project to Start Construction by 2019 Without Cost from the Government

The highly anticipated construction of the first-ever Light Railway Transit (LRT) in Cebu will start this coming 2019, after 30 long years of waiting.


According to some initial reports if the final approval is by the end of 2018, construction will start in 2019 and by the year 2022, the first phase of Cebu LRT will be operational.

The Phase 1 of the Cebu LRT Project is the construction of Carcar-Danao Line and Cebu City-Airport Line.



According to the initial plans of the Office of the Presidential Assistant for the Visayas, Sec. Michael Dino, beyond Cebu City, the LRT will go above ground to minimize utilization of the roads for the rail system's infrastructure such as the columns.

The Duterte admin also confirmed that the LRT Project in Cebu will operate without government subsidy and without a government guarantee. With the help of the Chinese government through its One Belt One road program, and several Chinese and Singaporean contractors. The project will be constructed with “zero cost” to the government.

According to Chris Kou, the consortium’s representative and project developer, a proponent led by Tjen Hian Ka, the consortium's senior consultant, started the process with the DOTr way back in the last quarter of 2017. The consortium expects to complete the process with the DOTr this year.



Chris Kou added further that Tjen Hian Ka is senior director of SAA Architects Pte Ltd (Singapore) and a recognized personality in architectural industry in Singapore and China. His company works in transportation and integrated development projects and completed various scales of metro rail and light rail projects in different countries in Asia.
