Over 600 Communist Rebels on DOJ's List of Terrorists

The Philippine government under the administration of Pres. Rody Duterte has asked a Manila court to declare more than 600 people to be included in the DOJ's List of Terrorists in the Philippines. The CPP-NPA were already declared as terrorists by some international communities such as the United States of Amercica.

The List of Terrorists who were allegedly members of the New People's Army includes communist leader Jose Maria Sison and even a UN Special Rapporteur together with some well-known leftist activists.

Based upon the petition filed by the Department of Justice, they asked the Manila City Regional Trial Court, Branch 19, to declare as terrorists more than 600 communist leaders and left-leaning activists.

Some of the most notable figures in the list of terrorists includes CPP leaders Benito and Wilma Tiamzon, National Democratic Front peace negotiators Luis Jalandoni, Connie Ledesma, Randall Echanis, and Rafael Baylosis, who is already detained at Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig City.

Aside from the prominent people named above, the Justice Department also listed former Bayan Muna Rep. Satur Ocampo, Catholic Priest Frank Fernandez, Ilocos Environmental activist Sherwin de Vera, and UN Special Rapporteur for the Rights of the Indigenous People Victoria Tauli-Corpuz, Vicente Ladlad and Adelberto Silva.

The controversial UN Special Rapporteur Tauli-Corpus was tagged by the DOJ as a member of the CPP's Ilocos-Cordillera Regional Committee.

According to the DOJ they filed the petition following President Rody Duterte's Proclamation No. 374, declaring the CPP and its armed wing, the New People's Army as terrorist organizations, and anyone proven to be financing these groups would be held liable under the law.

Proclamation No. 374 came a week after Mr. Duterte issued Proclamation No. 360, which cancelled government’s peace negotiations with the CPP-NPA and its political wing, the NDF.

The DoJ list consisted of 461 names and 188 aliases that the government sought to have declared as “terrorists.”

When CPP-NPA founding chairman Jose Maria Sison was asked for comments on the issue, he lashed back at Pres. Duterte calling him the "No.1 terrorist in the Philippines."
