Technical Working Group Recommends Temporary Closure of Boracay Island and Place Under State of Emergency

The Technical Working Group recommends the temporary closure of Boracay Island and place the popular tourist spot under State of Emergency. The recommendation of the technical working group as confirmed by DILG Assistant Secretary Epimaco Densing III in an interview with Bombo Radyo.


According to DILG Asec Densing they are now finalizing the recommendation in a scheduled meeting this coming February 21, 2018 which will be held in Boracay Island. They will invite DILG Secretary Eduardo Año, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Sec. Roy Cimatu and Tourism Sec. Wanda Teo.

Due to the huge extent of the problems in Boracay, according to Asec Densing, the national government should now took over to solve the huge problems faced by Boracay. The closure of Boracay Island could only be done once the island will be put under a state calamity.

Once Boracay will be put under a state of calamity, it could be easier for the national government to released funds for the rehabilitation of Boracay. The DILG also noted that there are funds allocated for the rehablitation of Boracay but until now they were not yet release to the island.

Once the declaration of a state of emergency will be approved by the national government, it will take around six months to rehabilitate the island.

The national government also targeted to close down Boracay from tourists within 60 days because there's a need to construct new infrastructure buildings in the city.
