Pres. Duterte Invited by Australia to Join the ASEAN-Australia Summit on March 2018

The tough-talking President of the Republic of the Philippines, Pres. Rody Duterte arrived in the Philippines from his official visit to India but before his arrival, a new invitation was released to the media. Australia invited the very first President from Mindanao to join other leaders of ASEAN for a commemorative summit in Sydney on March 16-18, 2018.

The Department of Foreign Affairs received a formal invitation signed by Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull according to the statement released to Philippine Star by Australian Ambassador Amanda Gorely.

Australian Prime Minister Turnbull visited Manila last November 2017, upon the invitation of Pres. Rody Duterte as he attended the 50th ASEAN founding anniversary and the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF).

Ambassador Gorely was quoted as saying "We hope to see all the ASEAN leaders, including President Duterte to attend the ASEAN-Australia commemorative summit to discuss common concerns on regional security and terrorism and continuing cooperation on economic and trade relations," Gorley said.

The ambassador noted that the large Filipino community in Australia will surely be an important part of the visit of Duterte.

The Australian Ambassador to the Philippines led the celebration of Australia's National Day on Thursday night at the Makati Shangri-La where Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea represented the President. Medialdea has been designated caretaker of MalacaƱang while Duterte is in New Delhi to attend the India-ASEAN commemorative summit.

Ambassador Gorley recalled that during Turnbull’s visit in Manila, Armed Forces chief of Staff Gen. Leonardo Guerrero told the Prime Minister how the Australian military aircraft relayed daily and real-time intelligence during the Marawi siege last year. The information helped the Philippines war against ISIS.
