Pres. Duterte Fires MARINA Administrator Marcial Quirico Amaro III Due to Excessive Foreign Trips

The tough talking President of the Philippines fired another high ranking government official due to "excessive foreign trips," according to Presidential spokesman Harry Roque. Pres. Duterte terminated the services of Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) administrator Marcial Quiricio III.

According to Presidential spokesman Harry Roque, the service of the former MARINA administrator was terminated by Pres. Duterte due to excessive foreign trips in the past years.

Spox Roque said that the Department of Transportation furnished him with the list of travels taken by Amaro during his incumbency as administrator of MARINA.

Based upon the documents gathered by the DOTr, Amaro went on six trips in 2016 and 18 trips in 2017 for a total of 24 trips abroad.

Spokesperson Harry Roque also noted that only three of the said trips were sponsored, and the rest were shouldered by the national government. The MARINA administrator also received honorarium in all his trips abroad.

Former MARINA Administrator Amaro is the second official fired for supposed excessive junkets, the first was Philippine Commission on Urban Poor chief Terry Ridon. The MARINA administrator vehemently denied claims of excessive junkets.

In a statement released to the media, Amaro said: "Simply, this claim is utterly false because, firstly, I have been able to discharge my official duties and, secondly, my travels -- as shall be explained -- were actually in fulfillment of my obligations as Administrator of the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA)."

Marina was created in June 1974 as an attached agency to the Office of the President under Presidential Decree No. 474. The agency reiterates the development, promotion and regulation of the maritime industry in the country.
