The administration of Pres. Rody Duterte promised a "Golden Age of Infrastructure" under the leadership of the very first President from Mindanao. The Duterte admin's rollout of 12 big-ticket infrastructure projects would allow Philippine Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to expand by 7 percent next year.
According to the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), the roll-out of the major infrastructure projects would create more jobs and spur consumption.
Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Ernesto M. Pernia said during a news briefing that these 12 projects include the Clark International Airport Expansion Project; and the Mindanao Railway Project Phase 1 Tagum-Davao-Digos Segment.
NEDA also noted that the 12 projects are part of the 36 approved policies and projects by the agency this year. Of the 36 approvals, around 20 were considered "hard infrastructure projects."
Sec. Pernia also stated the NEDA expects the NEDA Board, the highest policy-making body of the agency which is chaired by the President, to approve another 15 hard infrastructure projects in 2018.
During the briefing, NEDA Assistant Secretary Jonathan L. Uy said the interagency Investment Coordination Committee (ICC) Cabinet Committee (Cabcom) has proposed to the NEDA Board six other projects for approval this year or early next year.
Out of the six projects, three are considered new--the P20.313-billion Safe Philippines Project; the P11.369-billion Bridge Construction and Acceleration Project for Socioeconomic Development project; and a project to improve the capacity of the Philippine Coastguard.
According to NEDA the Safe Philippines project entails the construction of 18 integrated operations and command centers that are complete with video surveillance systems and a remote backup data center.
The other project, the Bridge Construction and Acceleration Project involves the construction of five iconic and 25 truss bridges. These particular projects will be constructed in nine regions of the country and will be completely by 2022 and have a collective length of 2,848 lineal meters.
Meanwhile, the project to improve the capacity of the Philippine Coast Guard involve the acquisition of six helicopters that will be used for marine disaster response.
Aside from the three mentioned special projects, the ICC Cabcom also approved the changes in cost for the Bohol-Panglao International Airport project; the Samar Pacific Coastal Road; and the second phase of the Jalaur River Multi-purpose Project, that encountered implementation delays.
