The Department of Justice (DOJ) filed a libel case against controversial lawmaker, Sen. Antonio Trillanes at the Makati City Regional Trial Court (RTC). The case against Trillanes stemmed from the complaint filed by former Vice President Jejomar Binay.
VP Binay in his earlier complaint, accused Sen. Trillanes of defaming, maligning his reputation and causing his dishonor. The former Mayor of Makati City, cited an article published by Inquirer.net where the senator revealed an alleged anomaly of "ghost senior citizens" in Makati City.
Sen. Trillanes was quoted as saying in the Inquirer article that he will lead in exposing at a Senate Committee hearing an alleged P100-million "racket" in Makati about "ghost senior citizens" claiming the benefits durign the former VP's term as Mayor of Makati City.
An audit allegedly showed that at least 30,000 listed senior citizens, who have been supposedly receiving benefits from the Makati City government, were either nonexistent or dead, Senator Trillanes exposed.
The Senator stated "’Yun ang nakakataka dito so ngayon itong mga pangalan na ito, lumabas sa audit 45 percent nito o mga 30,000 names ay nonexistent or mga patay na pero tumatanggap ng benepisyo. ‘Yung benepisyo ‘yung mga cash bonuses at kung anu-ano pang mga sinasbai VP Binay (Vice President Jejomar Binay) na binibigay daw nya sa mahihirap at sa mga senior citizens ‘yun pala ay para lang talagang mabulsa nya,” the senator said in an interview over Radyo Inquirer 990AM.
The infomration of the DOJ case filed against Sen. Trillanes was signed by Senior Assistant State Prosecutor Edwin S. Dayon. The Information (charge sheet) was filed before the Makati Court Friday at around 2 p.m.
