Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) spokesperson Major General Restituto Padilla confirmed during the Mindanao Hour/Bangon Marawi press briefing that there is a possibility on Pres. Rody Duterte's claims that armed groups are planning to oust the chief executive.
Maj. Gen. Padilla was quoted as saying "'Yung pagpa-plano, meron po kaming nakikita na iba. At hindi lang naman po ‘yung oposisyon ang ano dito. Kaya ang binabantayan po talaga ng Armed Forces ay ‘yung mga armadong grupo (If we’re talking about plans, yes, we have monitored some groups planning the ouster. We’re not just talking about the opposition that’s why we’re really monitoring the armed groups),” he said.
The AFP noted that the armed groups planning to oust Pres. Duterte are mostly from the Reds or the Communists and the armed elements in Mindanao. Although there is also a possible involvement of the yellows but the AFP are not privy to the information yet.
The AFP spokesperson stated that they are now monitoring the country's security landscape and not the side of politics.
Meanwhile, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said that the President is serious when he said he is willing to be replaced by the military with a new leader if allegations that he as ill-gotten wealth is true.
Sec. Lorenzana said that he believes Pres. Duterte only made the challenge to reiterate that he has no more than P40-million life savings.
“Maraming beses na niyang sinabi iyun (He has said that a lot of times already). We think he is serious and he means it. But it is just to emphasize that contrary to claims by his detractors – he only has no more than P40-million life savings,” Lorenzana said.
President Duterte recently said the military could launch a coup attempt to drive him out of power if it believes he is corrupt.
