Sen. Drilon Opposed Sen. Sotto's Call for Probe Against Comelec Chief Bautista

Liberal Party Chairman and Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon opposed the suggestions of Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III's call for a legislative inquiry on the corruption claims against Commission on Elections (Comelec) chairman Andres Bautista.

In an explanation during an interview with GMA News, Sen. Drilon explained that the issue of jurisdiction should be settled first, amid the possibility of an impeachment case being filed against Chairman Bautista.

All the elected senators will sit as judges in the event that an impeachment complaint is forwarded to the Philippine Senate.

Sen. Drilon explained that "I do not know if the Blue Ribbon should take recognition over that because it is a possible impeachment case; and if the House of Representatives decides that it is an impeachable offense and brings to us the impeachment complaint, then we become juror or judges,” Drilon explained.

The veteran senator and former DOJ Secretary, Sen. Drilon added further that "And what the Senate Blue Ribbon will investigate will be the same subject matter that the impeachment court will investigate. So before the Blue Ribbon takes jurisdiction, I will strongly suggest that this issue of jurisdiction be first tackled and decided," he said.

Sen. Vicente Sotto III has filed Senate Resolution No. 456 asking the blue ribbon committee to look into Bautista's alleged non-compliance with Republic Act 6713 or the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees.

During the past few days, Mrs. Tisha Bautista, wife of Comelec Chairman Andres Bautista, claimed to have discovered nearly P1 billion in undeclared assets, including a condominium unit in San Francisco, California.

Chairman Bautista already denied all his wife's allegations, saying his wife was "motivated by greed" but failed to explain his side on where did the alleged assets came from and why it was not recorded on his official 2016 SALN.

The NBI has already been ordered by Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II to look into the allegations of ill-gotten wealth against Bautista.
