Pres. Duterte Satisfied with the National Government Response to Leyte Quake

The tough-talking President of the Republic of the Philippines, Pres. Rody Duterte visited Ormoc City on Thursday, July 13, 2017 and stated that he was satisfied with the national government response to Leyte Quake.

Pres. Duterte personally assess the government's efforts in the Province of Leyte following 6.5-magnitude earthquake that devastated the province last July 6, 2017.

The immediate response of the national government made the President glad as he cited the importance of restoring power in affected areas.

The first President from Mindanao headed the situation briefing in Ormoc City Airport with the members of his Cabinet and local officials.

Pres. Duterte was able to know the updates on how to address the power outages as Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi reported that power restoration has been ongoing and by July 16, 40 Megawatts will be dispatched to Leyte.

The DOE stated that by July 19, there will be additional 90 MW that will be supplied to the province and by July 31, there will be full restoration of power.

Secretary Mark Villar of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) also reported to the President saying that roads and bridges are all passable. In terms of damages, he said there is an estimated P69 million in damages to 40 school buildings.

For local roads and foot bridges, the damages is P61 million, and for two hospitals, P20 million, and for two municipal buildings P2.9 million. School buildings are mostly repairable except for four buildings that were donated by an NGO, he said.

Sec. Villar pegged the allocation for repairs of public structures at P150 million, and for all structures about P300 million.

The DPWH Secretary said that the DPWH is preparing the program of works that will be done at the soonest possible time.

DSWD Sec. Judy Taguiwalo also reported to the President, saying that DSWD provided family food packs and hygiene kits to internally displaced persons (IDPs) while the management of evacuation centers is being done by the local government units (LGUs).

The DSWD also noted that to those who died, will be provided a cash assistance of P5,000 each as well as burial assistance. Medical assistance was also provided to those who have been injured.

DTI Secretary Ramon Lopez also said that after the quake, the agency dispatched a price monitoring team. He said prices of basic goods remain stable because there is no disruption in supply chain. Roads going to Ormoc City are passable and there is no effect on the supply and prices.

During the visit of President Rody Duterte and some of the country's Cabinet Secretaries, local officials were also present during the situational briefing. LGU officials includes Gov. Leopoldo Dominico L. Petilla, Ormoc City Mayor Richard Gomez, Rep. Lucy Torres-Gomez (4th Dist. Leyte) and Kananga Mayor Rowena Codilla.
