DPWH Sec. Villar Attends Groundbreaking of the P300-Million New Bacolod Economic Highway Section 2

Secretary Mark Villar of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) attends the groundbreaking ceremony of the P300-million New Bacolod Economic Highway Section 2 in Bacolod City.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the three-kilometer road network was held on Thursday afternoon at Purok Santan, Barangay Cabug, Bacolod City, Negros Occidental.

DPWH Sec. Mark Villar and Undersecretaries Karen Jimeno and Rafael Yabut attended the event together with Asst. Sec. Roberto Bernardo, Rep. Greg Gasataya, Mayor Evelio Leonardia, Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran, and DPWH District Engr. Abraham Villareal attended the multi-million Bacolod Economic Highway Project.

According to Bacolod City lone district representative Gasataya, the DPWH approved the first phase worth P300 million, including the road right-of-way for the construction of three-kilometer two-lane road from Brgy. Sum-ag to Brgy. Cabug.

Rep. Gasataya said that it is only a portion of the 21-kilometer Bacolod Economic Highway with a total cost of P4.8 billion.

The Bacolod Economic Highway Project was awarded to IBC-International Builders Corp. with contract amount for civil works of P164.799 million. It will be competed on May 20, 2018.

During the visit of DPWH Sec. Mark Villar he stated that he inspected the site to ensure that it will start immediately because the economic highway is important for the people of Negros Island.

Sec. Villar was quoted as saying "President Rodrigo Dutere always wants to make sure that all the projects are finished fast,” he said. He added that when he returns to Manila, he will for ask an additional budget from Department of Budget and Management to fast track the implementation of the economic highway project.

"The DPWH assures you that we will fast track the construction and I will propose to make it four lanes,” Villar said.

According to Sec. Villar the Bacolod Economic Highway is one of the major projects in Negros Island, and he expects that there will be more projects fro Negros island like flood control, equipment, convergence programs, and among others.

Rep. Gasataya on his part also noted that the New Bacolod Economic Highway (BEH) involves eight-meter roads with service road, bike and jogging lanes. The 21-km economic highway will span Barangays Sum-ag, Cabug, Felisa, Handumanan, Mansilingan, Estefania, Granada, Mandalagan, and Bata.

NBEH will also serve as an alternative to the existing Circumferential Road, bypassing the busy Bacolod central business district, which will eventually connect to the Bacolod Silay-Airport Access Road. He added that it will reduce traffic congestion in Bacolod and form a flexible road network, and provide smooth access to Bacolod-Silay Airport.
