Two Ex-Mayors of Lanao del Sur Signatories of Multi-Million Peso Cheques Recovered from Maute Group

The government forces identified two former Mayors of Lanao del Sur province as signatories of the controversial and recovered multi-billion peso cheques from the lair of the Maute Group in Marawi City after the terrorists abandoned a house where their sniper previously positioned.

According to the authorities about P27 million worth of cheques and P52 million in cash were recovered by the Philippine Marines in what they called as a machine gun nest of the terrorist group on Monday afternoon.

Some reliable sources from the government forces already identified two politicians who signed some of the cheques recovered but they will not divulge the names of the two politicians who served as mayors in Lanao del Sur province.

The two politicians who were involved in the recovered cheques are now pending investigation by the authorities.

Although the two mayors were already identified, unconfirmed information though showed that one of the two had died early this year.

According to authorities, they have recovered the cheques inside a vault in an abandoned residential lot. The government forces hope that the recovered cheques could finally lead them to the link between the terror group and suspected narco-politicians which President Rody Duterte earlier said were funding the terrorists who in turn protect the illegal drug dealers.

Peddling and helping terrorists groups is punishable by law based upon the Terrorism Financing Prevention and Suppression Act of 2012 penalizes any person "who, directly or indirectly, willfully and without lawful excuse, possesses, provides, collects or uses property or funds or makes available property, funds or financial service or other related services, by any means, with the unlawful and willful intention that they should be used or with the knowledge that they are to be used, in full or in part: (a) to carry out or facilitate the commission of any terrorist act; (b) by a terrorist organization, association or group; or (c) by an individual terrorist, shall be guilty of the crime of financing of terrorism and shall suffer the penalty of reclusion temporal in its maximum period to reclusion perpetua and a fine of not less than Five hundred pesos (Php500,000.00) nor more than One million pesos (Php1,000,000.00)."
