Ex-Pres. Noynoy Aquino Dies at Age 61

The 15th President of the Republic of the Philippines, former President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III, died on Thursday morning, June 24, 2021 as confirmed by some sources closed to the Aquino family. Noynoy Aquino was just 61 years old. 

Benigno Aquino III, is the son of democracy icons Ninoy and Cory Aquino, who also died earlier. Aquino was rushed at the Capitol Medical Centers in Quezon City. 

The son of democracy icon, Noynoy Aquino took the oath of office to become the 15th President on June 30, 2010, succeeding Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. He mounted his candidacy shortly after the death of Noynoy Aquino's mother as Presidential candidate in 2009 as Liberal Party's candidate. 

Noynoy Aquino was born on February 8, 1961, the only son of political leader and his namesake Benigno Simeon Aquino Jr. and Corazon Aquino, who was elected as President after the EDSA Revolution toppled the Marcos' Martial Law. 

The former President followed his mother's footsteps and became a President in 2010. Noynoy Aquino ran as Liberal Party's presidential candidate after then-former Sen. Mar Roxas, the President of Liberal Party, who stated that he would make the "supreme sacrifice" and give way to Noynoy Aquino. 

Noynoy Aquino announced his presidency in 2010, a month after he mother died to colorectal cancer in 2009. The former President ran on "Daang Matuwid" (straight and righteous path) platform, and vowed he would eradicate corruption, elevate the people living at the margins of society and instill transparency in governance. 

Prior to becoming the President of the Philippines, the late Noynoy Aquino had served as senator from 2007 to 2010 and a Representative of Tarlac in the Lower House from 1998 to 2007.
