Pres. Duterte Foresees DITO Telecom to End Duopoly in PH Telecom Industry

The tough-talking President of the Philippines, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte made a fearless forecast during an interview with the media that the entry of the third telco player, DITO Telecom will end duoploy in the country's telecommunications industry.

In an interview with the media, the President was quoted as saying "Let me make this opportunity to pose this challenge to Mislatel (now DITO Telecom): Break the prevailing duopoly in the telecommunications industry and fulfill your commitment to provide better telco services to our people," the President said.

DITO Telecommunity already received its certificate of public convenience and necessity (CPCN), or permit to operate as a telco from the President which signifies its entry to the telecom business in the country.

The firm's entry as the Philippines third telco player is in line with the Duterte administration's project to improve the Internet speed in the country from 4.5Mbps to 55Mbps within the next five years to better aid the Philippine economy.

Pres. Duterte added further that "To our people, I encourage you to take advantage of the many opportunities arising from a more vibrant telecommunications industry by engaging in productive ICT-based undertakings.  Expand your businesses, engage in online jobs, avail of online learning and training opportunities, and participate in productive public discussions,” the President said.

DITO Telecommunity has already lodged a performance security bond amounting to P25.7 billion after receiving its licence from the Philippine government.

The third telco player in the country is expected to launch its commercial roll-out this coming March 2021. As of October 2020, the firms already finished more than 1,300 operational cell sites and towers across the country and some of them are under construction for additional cell towers.

In a report to the DICT on its current progress, DITO Telecommunity is on track for its March 2021 commercial launch. According to DITO, they reported the successful series of local and international test phone calls made.

The company is 60.8% owned by Mr. Dennis Uy's Udenna Corp. and Chelsea Logistics as well as the Infrastructure Holdings Corporation while the rest is owne by China Telecom, one of China's largest telecom provider.
