DITO Telecommunity Completes Construction of 1,532 Towers as of October 28, 2020

The country's third telco player set to challenge Globe and PLDT-Smart reported that they completed at least 1,532 towers as of October 28, 2020.

This is a good news and positive indications that all are going well in terms of preparation. Last September 2020, the company reported that they finished a total of 859 towers but after a month the number almost double.

DITO Telecom says that they're on track for their commercial launch by March 2021 as they revealed in an interview with the media that in roughly 160 days they will be launching the country's newest telco.

According to Chief Administrative Officer of DITO Telecom, Atty. Adel Tamano "we are hoping to launch a little earlier but it won't be far from the March 2021 commercial launch date.

The 1,532 cell towers completed by DITO Telecom nationwide is more than enough to provide connection speeds of 27 megabits per second (Mbps) to at least 37% of the population in its first year of operation.

Former Gen. Rodolfo Santiago, DITO Telecom's Chief Technology Officer stated that the company is expected to finished around 2,000 towers by yearend which would comfortably provide 47-49% coverage nationwide.

The National Telecommunications Commission earlier gave the firm owned by billionaires businessman Dennis Uy, a close ally of Pres. Duterte, an additional six months for its technical audit which should have happened in July, after COVID-19 lockdowns forced the company to slow down its rollout of backend and infrastructure works.

Atty. Adel Tamano also noted that "With the towers that we have, it really bodes well that we pass our technical audit. We can satisfy the 37% coverage," Atty. Tamano said.

Based on DITO's report to NTC, about 40% of their cell sites will be rooftop towers. The completed towers are separate from the common tower deals which will be shared with other providers.

The Uy-led telco firm posted a ₱25.7-billion performance bond for its commitments under its new status. This may be forfeited if Dito fails to provide at least 55 Mbps mobile data connectivity to at least 84% of the country in five years.
