DITO Telecom Plans to Install 880 Cellular Towers Across Mindanao

The country's third telecom company, DITO Telecommunity Corporation is planning to install 880 cellular towers across Mindanao, including 237 in Davao City alone, hometown of the company's owner Dennis A. Uy.


According to the company's Chief Technology Officer, Rodolfo D. Santiago, they are now aiming to have these infrastructure in place in time for the highly anticipated roll-out and commercial launch this coming March 2021.



DITO Telecom revealed that at least 79 cellular towers "are already fully mobilized," as stated by the retired military general in an e-mail sent to Businessworld.

The company that set to compete with PLDT and Globe Telecom has tapped four companies to assist and speed up site acquisition activities.

Gen. Santiago was quoted as saying "DITO has appointed four duly authorized representatives (vendors) to assist in site acquisition, namely: Huawei for North Luzon and the National capital Region, ZTE for South Luzon and the Visayas, Nokia-Huaxin for Mindanao, and Udenna Infrastructure,” he said.

The agents of these vendors mentioned above have been provided with identification cards and authorization letter to initiate a contract with property owners, including presentation of rental rates and conditions.



The Duterte administration issued a new guidelines streamlining the requirements for constructing cellular towers after Pres. Duterte ordered to fast-track the expansion of the country's telecommunication network.

Pres. Rody Duterte initially thretened telecommunications companies such as Globe Telecom and PLDT-Smart of closure or expropriation, but officials of the two major providers, explained to the President that extensive permit procession is one of the main hurdles to expansion.

The guidelines released by the National Telecommunications also cover the construction of new common towers, or those that will be shared by telecommunications companies.

DITO Telecommunity Corp., formerly known as Mindanao Islamic Telephone Company, Inc., or Mislatel, is considered as the third major telecommunications provider in the Philippines.

The company is 60.8% owned by Mr. Dennis Uy's Udenna Corp. and Chelsea Logistics as well as the Infrastructure Holdings Corporation while the rest is owne by China Telecom, one of China's largest telecom provider.
