Pres. Rody Duterte Visits the Victims of Guimaras-Iloilo Sea Tragedy

The tough-talking President of the Republic, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte once again showed his soft side as he visited the victims of the Ilo-ilo Sea Tragedy. He was joined by Sen. Bong Go and Secretary Michael Dino.

The President together with Sen. Go and Sec. Dino visit the wakes of the victims of the tragic sea incident where three motorbancas capsized last Saturday, August 3, 2019, on their way to Guimaras Islan from Parola Wharf in Iloilo City.

The Office of the President headed by Pres. Rody Duterte personally gave financial assistance to the families of the victims aside from paying respects to the deceased.

Pres. Duterte tried to visit the island of Guimaras, but due to bad weather, the chopper that he rode was not given clearance to cross the small island where some of the victims' remains were interred.

According to the initial reports of the Philippine Coast Guard some victims, who were residents of Barangay Ermita, Cebu City, were members of the Baguio family who wanted to cross to Guimaras Island so they could visit the family of Nieves Grandeza, the girlfriend of Romeo Baguio, Jr.

The young Romeo Baguio Jr. brought his family to meet with girlfriend's family in Guimaras so that he could formally introduce himself and his family, as he had planned to propose to Nieves Grandeza, all in accordance with Filipino tradition. Tragically, the happy occasion was not meant to be.

According to Ermita Barangay Captain Mark Miral he flew to Iloilo to make sure that the remains of the nine victims, all residents of Barangay Ermita, Cebu, will be flown back to their hometown.

OPAV, in partnership with Cebu City Government, facilitated the transport of the remains of the nine victims. The remains will be flown to Cebu in the afternoon of August 8, via C-130.

The Office of the Presidential Assistance for the Visayas through Secretary Dino will personally give financial assistance to the Baguio family in Cebu.

The Duterte administration has ordered the Philippine Coast Guard to conduct an investigation on why the motorbancas were allowed to set sail despite the reported bad weather.
