Must Watch: Hospital Staffs Celebrates Historic New Year Countdown Due to Decrease in Fireworks Injuries

Doctors, Nurses and Staffs of Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center made headlines on social media after they were able to celebrate a historic New Year Countdown for the very first time under the Duterte administration due to the huge success of decreasing firecracker-related injuries during the New Year.

In the past, doctors and nurses at the Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center welcome the new year seeing and treating the wounds and amputated hands of firecracker victims. This time, they are able to shout the final seconds of 2018 out loud as they are having the lowest running number of related injuries in the hospital’s history.

According to the official data released by the Department of Health, there's a recorded 58 percent decrease in fireworks-related injuries as DOH declared a "historic" reduction in the number of those injured in welcoming the new year.

In a press conference, DOH Secretary Francisco Duque III said in a press conference that there were only 139 cases reported nationwide from December 21, 2018 to January 1, 2019 (6AM), as compared to 428 cases during the same period of last year.

Out of the 139 cases, the DOH said 137 were injuries from firecrackers, while the other 2 were cases of fireworks ingestion.

There were no stray bullets and deaths reported, added the DOH. Majority of the cases were found to be males at 81 percent; while the age range is from 2-69 years old.

Most injuries were blast/burn without amputation with 102, while blasts with amputation accounted for 5. Another 36 cases were eye injuries.

The good news about the decrease in the number of firecrackers-related injuries were attributed by most netizens to the strict implementation of the Duterte administration to follow his executive order regarding the regulations of firecrackers although there's no order about firecrackers ban across the country.
