DND Finalizing Plans to Procure Turkish T129 ATAK Multirole Combat Helicopter for PAF

The Department of National Defense under the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte has edged closer or finalizing its decision to proccure the Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) T129 ATAK Multirole Combat Helicopter to meet a long standing requirement in the Philippine Air Force for the modernization of the AFP.

According to the DND a procurement team was already set up by the Philippine Air Force (PAF) in support of its combat utility helicopter (CUH) programme has identified the Turkish made T129 platform as fulfilling its capacity demands, although the procurement project has not yet been finalized.

In an exclusive interview with Jane's publication on November 29, Arsenio Andolong, the DND's chief of public affairs was quoted as saying ""The DND is considering the acquisition of the T129 attack helicopter from Turkey, among other options, based on the recommendation of the technical working group of the Philippine Air Force.

It should be noted, however, that the acquisition project is still in its initial stages and nothing is final at this point."

The comment of the top officials of the DND in the Philippines came a few days after the Commanding General of the PAF, Lt. Gen. Galileo Kintanar, reportedly disclosed that the T129 was the technical working group's preferred option for the service's CUH programme.

The Philippine Air Force (PAF) is understood to have passed a recommendation to procure the T129 onto the DND, which is now expected to engage with TAI on the potential acquisition.

The acquisition of the Turkish-made combat helicopter is expected to be facilitated through a government-to-government deal between the Philippines and Turkey, possibly involving credit provided by Turk Eximbank, Turkey's official export credit agency.

The defence ties between the Philippines and Turkey has grown stronger through diplomatic channels and earlier this year the Philippines and Turkey agreed to expand defence industrial collaboration. Before the reported acquisition of combat helicopters from Turkey, a Turkish company delivered to the Philippines at least seven (7) ACV-15 tracked armoured vehicles made by FNSS Savunma Sistemleri. Those vehicles were delivered from 2010.
