Entry of Okra, Avocado sought
PRRD SEEKS LOWER TARIFF
FOR AGRI PRODUCTS TO ROK
By Manny Piñol
Seoul, South Korea - President Rody Duterte yesterday asked the Republic of Korea (ROK) to lower the tariff imposed on agricultural products entering the country, including Bananas.
During an hour-long Bilateral Meeting held at the Blue House yesterday, President Duterte also sought the facilitation of new Philippine agricultural products being introduced in South Korea like Okra and Avocado.
Responding to the Philippine President’s request, ROK President Moon Jae-In said his government will look into mechanicsms to allow lower tariff for Philippine agriculture products.
Pres. Moon said the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) could be a possible instrument for the lowering of duties.
The RCEP is an agreement forged by member-countries of the ASEAN with South Korea.
(Philippine Finance Secretary Carlos G. Dominguez, however, says that trade facilitation through RCEP is a slow process and instead proposed a Bilateral Preferential Trade Agreement betwee the Philippines and South Korea.)
South Korea imposes a 30% tariff on Philippine fruits, especially bananas while enjoying very low duties for Korean fruits, trucks, cars and farm equipment.
Pres. Moon said that other mechanisms could also be explored as an option to the RCEP.
The prospects of increased engagements in agriculture between the Philippines and South Korea are bright especially with the signing yesterday of the Memorandum of Understanding on Agricultural Cooperation.
