SERENO ON INDEFINITE "WELLNESS LEAVE"?

Supreme Court Associate Justice Samuel Martires broke the ice during yesterday's SC en banc session.

He told Chief Justice Lourdes Sereno, “I love and have been serving this institution for the past 17 years. Gusto ko lang ho isalba itong institution from these attacks from the political branches of government So be honest to us: did you really file your SALN?”

Sereno snidely replied, “I will be very honest to you Justice Sam, I have complied with SALN requirements… IS THAT FINE?”

Martires retorted, “I cannot wait for the Senate anymore. Between now and the Senate (Impeachment Trial), I request that you go on indefinite leave of absence until such time that you’re clear of all these accusations and charges!”

Sereno replied, “(There’s) no basis (for such a request)! There’s no basis for that!”

Martires said, “There is a basis. We want to preserve the integrity of this instution, the Supreme Court. Otherwise, lahat ng naka-agenda, let’s call again after three months… I’m not going to attend this en banc session anymore.”

Martires was about to walk out from the en banc session but Associate Justice Marvic Leonen dissuaded him and said, “Let’s decide as a collegial body. Anyway, this is not an elephant in the room.”

Martires reportedly said this to Sereno during the SC en banc session held on 27 February 2018, According to veteran The Manila Times SC Beat reporter Jomar Canlas during his interview at Karambola sa DWIZ held earlier today.
