SolGen Calida Lambasts Ombudsman for Witholding the Decision Dismissing Trillanes' Case vs. Pres. Duterte

Solicitor General Jose Calida lambasts the Office of the Ombudsman for witholding some information particularly the decision of their office to dismiss the plunder case filed by Sen. Antonio Trillanes against Pres. Rody Duterte.

The Solicitor General was quoted as saying "The recommendation to terminate was approved by Deputy Ombudsman Cyril Ramos on 29 November 2017... This case involves the President of the Republic of the Philippines. Why are you withholding this information? When this case was filed, a press conference was even conducted...Three months after the termination of the case, the public has still no knowledge that the evidence supporting the allegations of Trillanes is without merit.”

SolGen Calida also noted that Ombudsman Carpio-Morales being the Ombudsman, must be the protector of the people. She has the constitutional duty to publicize matters covered by investigations when the circumstances so warrant and with due prudence.

The Office of the Solicitor General headed by SolGen Caalida said the he inquired from the Office of the Ombudsman (OMB), through a letter dated February 8, 2018, about the status of the criminal complaint filed by Trillanes on May 5, 2016 which accused Pres. Duterte of maintaining ghost employees in Davao City that could have funded the latter's alleged P2.4 billion worth of deposits.

Due to the alleged witholding of information regarding the results of the case filed against Pres. Duterte, SolGen Calida questioned the decision of Morales to withold from the public the status of the case and reminded that "A public officer must be accountable to the people, serve them with utmost responsibility, integrity, and efficiency,” he stated.

SolGen Calida also added that it remains pointless for Trillanes to hold a Senate hearing on Duterte’s alleged unexplained wealth and undeclared bank accounts considering these are based on the complaint filed before the OMB. The Senate should stop this nonsense investigation, Calida urged the Upper House of Congress.
