Sec. Andanar Announce Introduction of Satellite Network Providing 42,000 Receivers to All Barangays Nationwide

The Philippine government under the leadership of Pres. Rody Duterte will be introducing its own satellite network for the year 2018 that would bring government information directly to barangays. An estimated 42,000 government satellite receivers would be installed in barangays all over the country.

According to Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Martin Andanar in an itnerview with a Metro Manila radio station, aside from access to the government bulletin board channel and other state-run channels, the government satellite network would also provide free internet access to barangay residents, including those in far-flung areas.

Sec. Andanar was quoted as saying "Nagkaroon tayo ng National Information Convention (NIC) kung saan, for the first time, natipon po natin ang more than 1,800 information officers mula sa iba’t ibang sulok ng Pilipinas. At very inspired sila at binigay natin sa kanila iyong balita na the government will be ready to roll out 42,000 satellite receivers para sa mga barangay, may internet po, may TV, mayroon pong government bulletin board," the Communications Secretary explained.

The former TV-5 journalist, Sec. Andanar also noted that the satellite network will be for all barangays who don't have any direct access to the President. The satellite network would broadcast
television channels run by offices such as the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), Department of Health (DOH), and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

The government's satellite network would also be helpful in calamity situations as it would provide warnings and advisories on approaching weather systems.

"Lahat ng kalamidad, lahat ng mga warning, lahat ng mga balita, bulletin board mula sa gobyerno... hindi lang sa Metro Manila kung hindi sa buong Pilipinas,"  Andanar said, adding that a company was already working on an unsolicited proposal for the receivers.

For the first phase of the nationwide satellite project, Sec. Andanar revealed that the government will roll out the 2,000 receivers in coordination with the Department of the Interior and Local Government. Pres. Rody Duterte approved the nationwide satellite project during the last Cabinet meeting in 2017.
