Ombudsman Junks Trillanes' Plunder Case vs. Pres. Duterte

The Office of the Solicitor General confirmed to the media that the Office of the Ombudsman has junked the plunder case against President Rodrigo Roa Duterte. The investigation ended because of insufficiency of evidence and lack of merit.

Solicitor General Jose Calida revealed in a press briefing that Deputy Ombudsman Melchor Carandang sent him a letter stating that the plunder complaint filed by Sen. Antonio Trillanes against Pres. Duterte "was already closed and terminated as early as November 29, 2017."

The solicitor general noted that the letter "means there is no evidence to support that complaint" referring to Trillanes' unproven claimed against the chief executive. Some news media outlets obtained a copy of Carandang's letter to Calida dated February 12, 2018.

The letter stated: "Based on the record, the recommendation to terminate the investigation was approved by Deputy Ombudsman Cyril E. Ramos."

Despite the dismissal of the case against Pres. Duterte filed by one of his staunchest critic, Sen. Trillanes, Deputy Ombudsman Carandang, refused to grant Calida's request for a copy of Trillanes' complaint and its attachments, citing confidentiality.

Solicitor General Calida also revaled that he asked the Office of the Ombudsman for an update to the case as the government's lawyer. He noted that he has no clue as to why the Ombudsman did not disclose the development to the public.

Sen. Antonio Trillanes filed a plunder complaint against Pres. Duterte, the former mayor of Davao City who was accused by the senator of having ghost employees on the payroll of the Davao City government. Trillanes  alleged that this is the source of Duterte's hidden wealth, which he supposedly discovered in his bank accounts.

According to Sen. Trillanes, the sources of his bank documents came from his insiders working for AMLC, but the agency vehemently denied that the documents of Trillanes came from the inside of the AMLC.
