Soldiers Helping Mayon Evacuees Ambushed by NPA in Guinobatan, Albay

Personnel of the 83rd Infantry Batallion of the Philippine Army were ambushed by members of the terrorist group New People's Army (NPA) rebels in Guinobatan, Albay despite the fact that the soldiers were just rescuing evacuees of the Mayon Volcano eruption.

According to authorities a soldier was wounded in the said ambushed staged by the NPA. The members of the AFP were on military truck on their way to Barangay Doña Mercedes in Guinobatan, Albay to evacuate residents of the area.

The evacuation was conducted by the Army after the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology raised Mayon Volcano’s alert level to 4 but they were waylaid by the members of the NPA.

The wounded soldier was identified as Pfc. Gilno Canuel, he was hurt during the exchange of gunfire which resulted also to numerous wounded guerrillas fleeing for their lives during the encounter, according to the statement released to the media by Senior Inspector Malou Calubaquib, Bicol Police spokesperson.

A few minutes after the said ambush by the NPA, Guinobatan police officers set up a checkpoint along the provincial road in Barangay Tinago.

Cedric Daep of the Albay Provincial Security and Emergency Management Office told a press conference that he wanted the NPA to help the evacuees. He was quoted as saying "I am appealing to the NPA to help us bring the evacuees to a safe area," Daep said.

The ambushed incident in Albay happened during the time when the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) turned down President Duterte's call for them to surrender. The CPP noted on their website that "Duterte's call for the NPA to surrender in exchange for cash, housing and jobs is pure hogwash," the CPP said.
