A landmark bridge in the Province of Isabela worth around P639.6-Million is now undergoing construction according to the report of DPWH Region 2 Director Melanio C. Briosos said in his report to DPWH Secretary Mark Villar.
The 720-lineal landmark bridge project of the DPWH is set to replace the overflow bridge structure connecting the towns of Sta. Maria and Cabagan in Isabela Province. The Isabela bridge project which will cross the Cagayan River is expected to be completed next year.
According to Sec. Villar the Isabela bridge project or the Cabagan-Sta. Maria bridge is funded on a multi-year program. The projects involves the construction of a 12 span bridged, concreting of two-lane approaches measuring 557 meters (6.70 meter wide), and additional 574-meter shoulder improvement, slope protection works, earthworks, drainage structure and other miscellaneous structures.
Once the landmark bridge project in Isabela Province, the bridge and its approaches will significantly reduce travel time to Cordillera Administrative Region and benefit about 2,751 motorists per day, made possible with the connection of Santiago - Tuguegarao Road and Daang Maharlika (Cagayan Valley Road)
DPWH Region 2 Director also noted that "The project will spur socio-economic development and increase productivity in the areas to alleviate the living condition of the populace as well as improve and provide direct access to and between outlying barangays, municipalities and cities,” Director Briosos said.
The Isabela landmark bridge also known as Cabagan – Sta. Maria Overflow Bridge is usually impassable during heavy rains submerging the structure to floodwaters and swollen Cagayan River.
DPWH Secretary Villar also noted that with its aesthetic design, the new bridge is seen to help boost the tourism in the province as it will be the first of its kind in the country.
