CJ Maria Lourdes Sereno to Face Possible Impeachment Trial by May 2018

A lawmaker revealed on Tuesday that Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno could face a possible impeachment trial by May 2018 if one third of the House of Representatives votes in favor of the impeachment complaint before Holy Week.

In an interview with popular radio station DZMM, Oriental Mindoro Rep. Rey Umali stated that the House Justice committee will be focusing on the accusation of betrayal of public trust against CJ Sereno as the hearings resume on January 15, 2018.

According to Rep. Umali, the hearings at the Justice Panel could last until February 2018. The lawmaker also revealed that out of 27 allegations against Sereno, they are still into 5-6 cases and there's a lot of people who want to testify, therefore it will surely take some time.

Rep. Umali said that after the hearings, he expects the justice panel to transmit the complaint to the plenary for a possible vote before Holy Week.

Once the impeachment complaint passes through plenary vote before Holy Week, the lawmaker noted that it will be elevated to the Senate impeachment court by the month of May 2018.

The impeachment complaint against Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno, the head of the Supreme Court who was appointed by former Pres. Aquino, was filed by veteran lawyer Lorenzo Gadon.

Atty. Lorenzo Gadon accused CJ Cereno of culpable violation of the Constitution, betrayal of public trust, corruption, and other high crimes.

Rep. Umali previously said that three (3) more magistrates are likely to attend the proceedings. Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio has also inquired about the matters to be covered by his requested testimony.

During the 2017 hearing, they have tackled Sereno's supposed alleged deliberate delay in granting survivorship claims of families of late justices and an order creating the Judiciary Decentralized Office.

Aside from Chief Justice Sereno, impeachment raps were also filed before the House of Representatives against former COMELEC Chief Andres Bautista and Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales.

The last time a Chief Justice was impeached was during the time of the late Chief Justice Renato Corona who was impeached controversially last December 11, 2011 during the presidency of NoyNoy Aquino.
