Outgoing Philippine National Police Chief, Director General Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa will be appointed by President Rody Duterte head the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) after his retirement from the police force.
President Duterte made the announcement of appointing Gen. Dela Rosa during a Christmas Party with members of the Malacanang Press Corps on Tuesday night.
Gen. Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa, who also served as Davao City Chief of Police is set to retire on January 21, 2018. He is expected to be replaced by Deputy Director General Ramon Apolinario, the PNP's second-in-command.
According to Gen. Bato Dela Rosa the President revealed to him earlier that he will be given the "most challenging position in government, where everyone else had failed."
In an interview with the media, Gen. Bato Dela Rosa was quoted as saying "The most challenging na trabaho sa gobyerno. Sabi niya, 'where everyone failed, I expect you to succeed.' Napakabigat na trabaho niyan. Sige imagine-in niyo na lang ang pinakamahirap na trabaho," he told reporters on Tuesday.
Pres. Duterte during his assumption as the country's chief executive named Benjamin delos Santos as his first Bureau of Corrections Chief but the latter left his post amid reports of continued drug proliferation at the New Bilibid Prison.
The BuCor is currently headed by retired Chief Supt. Vafrie Tabian. During the past few months under the Duterte administration, there were still continued drug trade inside the facility that prompted the deployment of Special Action (SAF) personnel inside the national penitentiary.
Gen. Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa is considered as one of the most trusted men of the President, leading the much criticized war on drugs of the national government and even commended by numerous countries for his success in bringing down the incidents of criminality and illegal drugs used in the Philippines.
